Wael was born in Cairo in 1975, holds a PhD in the Philosophy of Contemporary Drawing and Painting and currently works as a PhD Professor at the Faculty of Art Education, Department of Drawing and Painting. Wael has been a practitioner of art since 1996 and his style varies between painting and drawing; collages and mixing materials; and installation and digital art.
He has participated in 57 international and local cultural events including the Christie’s Auction for Contemporary Art (2013), the 55th Venice Biennale (2013) and Art 14 London (2014). Wael’s first solo exhibition was in 2002 and he has held a total of 20 exhibitions ever since. His latest solo exhibition was held at DAI Art Gallery in Cairo (2018). Wael also participated in various international workshops starting from 2007 and was given several local and international awards including an award from the Museum of Contemporary Art in the Republic of Slovenia (2010), the Biennale Award at the First International Biennale, Art Symposium in Veliko Gradista Pozarevac, Serbia (2018) and 1st Prize at the 15th Fine Artes Festival-Mounstir in Tunisia (2018).
Many of Wael’s local and international acquisitions include ones at the Museum of Contemporary Egyptian Art in Cairo, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Bonn, Lendava Museum of Contemporary Art in Slovenia, Sultan Al Qasimin Center in United Arab Emirates, Cairo International Airport as well as various embassies in Cairo.
